What is Miqat? Why should we pay attention?

Hajj is one of the five pillars of our religion Islam, and every year millions of Muslims flock to the holy lands to visit the Kaaba and perform the pilgrimage.

Hajj is a physical worship that includes certain rules to be followed. There are certain rules to ensure that these rules are fulfilled correctly. One of these rules is "miqat" and it is a very important issue to pay attention to.

What is Miqat?

Miqat is the name given to the borders that indicate that Muslims who want to come to Mecca must put on ihram before reaching the borders called Harem-i Sharif. It is mandatory for pilgrim candidates or Umrah pilgrims to be in ihram before passing through these borders. Ihram is a special dress consisting of two pieces of white fabric worn by pilgrims.

Miqat is the final point determined to enter ihram and pilgrims must wear ihram before coming here. Before entering Ihram, pilgrims must clean up and cut their hair, beard and nails.

Why is Miqat Important?

When pilgrims arrive at the miqat point, they state their intentions and enter ihram. Miqat is a designated point to ensure that pilgrims perform their prayers correctly. When the pilgrims arrive at the Miqat point, they are ready to begin their prayers and set off towards Mecca. In this way, pilgrims are enabled to move together and perform their prayers at the same time. For this reason, miqat limits are very important. Maximum importance should be given to putting on Ihram before passing through these borders.

Why Do You Put on Ihram at the Airport When Traveling from Turkey?

Miqat may vary depending on where the pilgrims come from and which route they take. For example, the closest miqat to Mecca is in the Najd region, and this is the miqat point for pilgrims coming from this region. Other miqat points include Jeddah, Yemame, Zatü'l-Irk, El-Akabe and Dhat-i Tuva.

There is a high probability that our pilgrims who want to go to Mecca from our country will pass the miqat location while on the plane. As explained above, it is necessary to wear the ihram before entering the miqat. For this reason, ihram is worn at the airport before boarding the plane, as the plane departing from Turkey will have crossed the miqat borders while in the air. Thus, the risk of crossing the miqat borders without ihram is eliminated.
